For centuries, we called Ukraine the Ukraine because it was unorganized politically. It was like the Sahara, or the Mediterranean. Michener's 1981 novel: Poland, has lots of information about Ukraine. At the end of WW1, it would've been desirable (for the west) to make Poland and Ukraine one country, but it wouldn't work culturally or linguistically. Although, it could've worked economically and geographically.
